Methods to Reduce Forest Residue Volume after Timber Harvesting and Produce Black Carbon
نویسندگان
چکیده
Forest restoration often includes thinning to reduce tree density and improve ecosystem processes and function while also reducing the risk of wildfire or insect and disease outbreaks. However, one drawback of these restoration treatments is that slash is often burned in piles that may damage the soil and require further restoration activities. Pile burning is currently used on many forest sites as the preferred method for residue disposal because piles can be burned at various times of the year and are usually more controlled than broadcast burns. In many cases, fire can be beneficial to site conditions and soil properties, but slash piles, with a large concentration of wood, needles, forest floor, and sometimes mineral soil, can cause long-term damage. We describe several alternative methods for reducing nonmerchantable forest residues that will help remove excess woody biomass, minimize detrimental soil impacts, and create charcoal for improving soil organic matter and carbon sequestration.

Sustainable forestry in the tropics: panacea or folly?
12 The profitability of uncontrolled logging can be a significant obstacle to sustainable forest 13 management, especially in the tropics. Rice et al. (1997) have argued that not only does 14 traditional selective logging provide higher returns but also incurs less damage to forests than 15 sustainable forest management systems that involve harvesting of many species and the creation 16 of larg...
متن کاملForest Harvesting with Multi - Factor Uncertainty 1 _ 15 _ 11
We provide a multi-factor real option model for a single harvest and then for perpetual forest harvesting, which extends the Faustmann (1849) approach to infinite rotations with multi-factor uncertainty. We examine separately forest growth and timber prices (and eventually credits/penalties for CO2 uptake/release upon harvest), so the forester can focus on critical exogenous and partially endog...
متن کاملSpatial Forest Harvest Scheduling for Areas Involving Carbon and Timber Management Goals
Forest carbon sequestration has become an important ecological service for human society. Given the widespread attention paid to global climate change over the last few decades, a potential need has arisen to develop forest management plans that integrate carbon management and other spatial and non-spatial goals. The objective of this research was to develop a spatial forest planning process by...
متن کاملChanges in winter conditions impact forest management in north temperate forests.
Climate change may impact forest management activities with important implications for forest ecosystems. However, most climate change research on forests has focused on climate-driven shifts in species ranges, forest carbon, and hydrology. To examine how climate change may alter timber harvesting and forest operations in north temperate forests, we asked: 1) How have winter conditions changed ...
متن کاملForest environmental investments and implications for climate change mitigation.
Forest environmental conditions are affected by climate change, but investments in forest environmental quality can be used as part of the climate change mitigation strategy. A key question involving the potential use of forests to store more carbon as part of climate change mitigation is the impact of forest investments on the timing and quantity of forest volumes that affect carbon storage. U...
